Chapter Twelve
Carrie
"You seem to be in a good mood," Julianne tells me when she catches me humming while making sugar flowers in the kitchen.
Silently, I admit I am. Why shouldn't I be now that Aaron's back and I know he doesn't find me disappointing or revolting? In fact, we had sex in the library four times yesterday. Four times. No wonder I'm still a little sore.
"Well, I'm always in a good mood when I'm dabbling in pastry," I tell her.
"Yes. I bet you and Aaron were dabbling in pastry yesterday when the two of you disappeared."
My busy fingers stop moving. Shit. She knows we were having sex, doesn't she?
"So, what did the two of you whip up? I bet it was something warm and sticky..."
I lift my head to meet her gaze. Yes, she knows.
She grins. "Sweetheart, I was neither born yesterday nor a nun."
Right. I purse my lips. "I'm sorry... for leaving like that and not coming back. Also, for how I behaved. I was disrespectful and mean and troublesome." I shrug. "I don't know what came over me."
"Well, I do." Julianne pats my shoulder. "It's fine. And Fanny and Alicia understood."
My eyebrows arch. "They did?"
"Well, Fanny had a few ruffled feathers, but I smoothed them. Alicia was all gloomy. She kept asking where Aaron was and wanting to go look for him. I told her not to."
If she had, she would have seen Aaron and me having sex in the library and it would have broken her little heart. I would have been embarrassed, but I'd recover. I'd probably have been more upset to be interrupted. Then again, there was no stopping Aaron yesterday.
"Thank you," I tell Julianne with a sincere smile.
Julianne nods. "By the way, those flowers are magnificent. They look so real."
I shrug. "That's the point."
"I'll leave you to it."
She makes her way across the room but stops in the middle and turns around.
"Oh, and one more thing..." She holds up a finger. "I'm not going to be here tonight. My friends and I are going to watch a play and we're staying at a hotel after. I'll be bringing a few members of the staff with me and the rest I'll be giving a night off, which means you and Aaron will have all the rooms in the house all to yourself, including this one. This room is where you're most comfortable and creative, isn't it?"
She winks. I blush.
Julianne proceeds to the door.
"Just don't break anything," she adds without glancing back.
I purse my lips and shake my head. I can't believe Aaron's mother is giving me ideas. Good ideas, I think with a grin.
Or should I say very bad ones?

"Carrie?" I hear Aaron's concerned voice from outside in the hall.
He's been cooped up in his father's old study all afternoon attending video conferences. He said the last one would end at eight and we could have dinner together, but it's been taking longer. I was beginning to get impatient, actually. Good thing it's over now.
"I'm here!" I shout after hoisting myself up onto the kitchen counter.
